Helpful Keyboard Shortcuts

Today we’ll be sharing some helpful keyboard shortcuts that you can use at work and at home

Windows Key + D

This shortcut will “show the desktop,” i.e. minimize all windows. Pressing it again will restore all of the windows that were previously up. This is super helpful if you need to quickly get to a desktop shortcut, and have open windows in the way.

Windows Key + L

Windows Key + L will lock your computer without logging you out. It’s best practice to lock your computer any time you walk away from it. This helps prevent unauthorized access. It doesn’t log you out - meaning, when you enter your credentials to unlock it, your previously running programs are still running, similar to the way your computer may lock when left unattended for a certain time.

Shift + Home, Shift + End

Shift + Home or End when editing text, such as in Word, will select all text between the cursor and the beginning or end of the line, respectively. Give it a try!

CTRL + arrow keys

Also when editing text, holding down CTRL will move the cursor words at a time instead of characters at a time.

ALT + Tab

Quickly cycle through your open windows with ALT + Tab! Add in the shift key to reverse the direction it cycles.

Windows Key + Tab

If you thought ALT + Tab was neat, this one might blow you away. Using Windows Key + Tab (in Windows 10) will give you a zoomed out view with your open windows arranged in a grid. You can click one to bring it to the front.

You can also add additional “Desktops” in which you can open a different set of windows. Then you can switch between your desktops to with different applications on each.

You can also drag and drop running programs/windows from one desktop to another!

CTRL + Shift + T, CTRL + T, CTRL + L

Ever accidentally close a tab in Chrome? Press CTRL + Shift + T to bring it back!

CTRL + T opens a new tab

CTRL + L will focus the address bar without opening a new tab, so you can do a search or enter a web address.

CTRL + P

A classic - use CTRL + P to print.

Windows key + E

Open a File Explorer window quickly.
