Export Your Bookmarks to Back Them Up!

Syncing your bookmarks (aka favorites) in your web browser to your online account is a huge convenience. But there is an important distinction between syncing and backing up – and this includes for those bookmarks.

Many rely heavily on their browser bookmarks every day. We often don’t remember the URL for websites we visit every week, or even every day. In business, there are also often website we need to visit just once a month, or quarter, or even year – no way we’re going to remember those! So, we bookmark the website to be able to find it easily when we need it.

What if your bookmarks were suddenly gone? We can surely find the websites again, eventually. But, what an inconvenience!

The fact is, sometimes glitches and errors happen, and there’s no exception for your web browser and the bookmark syncing services. We have seen the bookmark sync service have issues, causing bookmarks to suddenly disappear forever. Infuriating!

To save ourselves from these issues, we can regularly export our bookmarks to a file, so that we have a point-in-time copy of all of our important bookmarks.

Practically every major web browser allows you to easily export your bookmarks.

If you then save those export files to a safe location that is backed up, you can retrieve your latest export file to restore your bookmarks in the event a glitch happens with the sync service.

In Microsoft Edge, your bookmarks will be called “Favorites”. Click the menu button in the favorites menu to find the Export favorites option.

In Google Chrome, open your Bookmark Manager, click the menu button, and then choose Export bookmarks.

Perform this short export task regularly (or whenever you bookmark a new important page) so that you don’t end up in a situation with important bookmarks lost.

If you’re a client of Round Table Networks, ask us about automating this for you!
